Hawaii Artist Collaboration awarded a summer experience scholarship to the Donkey Mill Art Center to allow a student to take part in their Youth Summer Art Experience.

Congratulations to Mahealani (Mahea) Hill, age 17, who was invited to participate in a 5-week, intensive, art experience for youth at the Donkey Mill Art Center. The Donkey Mill, in conjunction with Humanity Hale, selected Mahea to join their Summer 2024 Experience. Hawaii Artist Collab provided the $1100.00 scholarship which sponsored a student in the program.
As a part of the art experience, Mahea worked with a variety of media and reflected on those which were most meaningful to her.
“I connected with metalsmithing and sound art the most. For metalsmithing I used symbolism to create a necklace that represented my ohana that would spiritually be in my kipuka and I added celestial elements, music and books. In sound art I created a soundscape of what my kipuka would sound like physically with animals and ocean waves and calm instruments.”
The art experience inspired Mahea to continue creating.
“I had such an amazing time in all of my classes and they were all unique in their own ways. I want to make more necklaces and more complex sculptures and prints, and I want to get into more music based sound art.”
Mahea encourages others to participate in the Donkey Mill Summer Art Experience for Youth.
“It’s a huge learning experience for everyone involved and it gives you skills to have more creativity in your own art and how you think about it. I never would have thought to do any of these if it wasn’t for this program and scholarship so I definitely recommend it to everyone!”
